Ocean Isle Beach, NC – ATMC recently completed construction to bring their FOCUS fiber optic service to Ocean Isle Beach. The project, which was completed in ten months, replaced the aging copper facilities that served the island with a new fiber optic network that is extremely reliable and capable of delivering voice, video and gigabit internet speeds through one connection. In addition to Ocean Isle Beach, ATMC has already begun construction to replace the existing copper network on Holden Beach with FOCUS fiber optics.
“Replacing the copper telephone network on Ocean Isle and Holden Beach with fiber optics is part of our on-going commitment to improve services for our cooperative members,” commented Keith Holden, ATMC CEO. “Because fiber optic lines are glass, they stand up to the harsh elements found on the islands much better than the copper telephone lines they are replacing. When you couple that with their incredible capacity to deliver fast broadband, the newer network has the capability of providing residents of our beach communities with as much bandwidth as they will need for decades to come.”
ATMC’s $5.5 million dollar network investment on Ocean Isle Beach has the potential to provide more than 6,000 residents and businesses there with access to Gigabit broadband speeds; the fastest available on the island. ATMC is already converting customers to the new fiber optic network, and will convert all remaining residents and businesses served by ATMC on the island to fiber optics by the end of this year.
“The Town of Ocean Isle Beach is grateful for the investment ATMC has made on our island,” said Mayor Debbie Smith. “We look forward to the long-term benefits fiber optic technology will bring to our residents and our businesses.”
Installing fiber optics on Ocean Isle and Holden Beach is just one piece of ATMC’s larger plan to expand and improve its services in the area. ATMC is nearing completion of its Oak Island fiber expansion project and will begin the process of replacing the existing copper network in Boiling Spring Lakes with fiber optics later in the year. In addition to ATMC’s fiber optic upgrades, the company is in the final year of a $5 million dollar initiative called Project 2019 which has brought faster internet with speeds of up to 300 Mbps to more than 3,000 of the cooperative’s most rural members. Project 2019 will bring high speed broadband access to another 1,000 members by the end of this year.
