Shallotte, NC – ATMC recently completed an internet upgrade for residents living in the Mill Branch community of Ash, increasing the maximum available broadband speed from 6 megabits per second (Mbps) to up to 300 Mbps. The Mill Branch upgrade is part of ATMC’s Project 2019 initiative, which has already made faster internet available to more than 3,000 members and will bring access to another 1,000 members by the end of this year.
The cooperative has invested approximately $5 million dollars to upgrade the cable TV system which serves many customers living in rural portions of Brunswick County. Upon completion of Project 2019, high speed internet of up to 300 Mbps (megabits per second), as many as 30 additional high definition channels, and home phone service will be able to be delivered via DOCSIS cable modem technology to homes and businesses within the upgraded areas. The Project 2019 upgrades are also enabling ATMC to begin the process of phasing out the copper network currently used to deliver traditional phone service.
“Fast, reliable internet is vital for access to online learning platforms, business, entertainment and more. We want our members to be able to take advantage of all the opportunities access to faster internet can provide,” said Keith Holden, ATMC CEO. “While our investment in the Project 2019 network upgrades allows us to provide better, faster, more reliable internet service to our members, it also provides us with a path by which we can replace our aging copper network infrastructure.”
Since the project began in 2017, ATMC has made faster broadband available to customers living in Bolivia, Midway, Longwood, Prospect, Waccamaw, Supply, Pireway and Honey Island. Construction to upgrade service for areas west of Winnabow in the Rabontown Community of Town Creek is currently underway and is on schedule to be made available in the coming weeks. More areas in the Mill Creek, Exum, Kingtown, Thomasboro and Hickman’s Crossroads communities will be upgraded by the end of this year.
