SUPPLY, N.C. (October 2, 2019) – Brunswick Electric Membership Corporation (BEMC) announced at its September Annual Membership Meeting that there will be changes to rate schedules for residential and commercial members beginning April 1, 2020.
“We have seen consistent pressure on costs over the past decade. BEMC has seen a nearly 17 percent increase in the cost of the power we purchase since our last comprehensive rate change,” said Josh Winslow, CEO and General Manager of BEMC. “We are announcing these necessary changes well in advance to give our membership time to prepare and adjust their energy usage habits. Changes in our rate structure with our wholesale power supplier will give our members new flexibility and options.”
This necessary rate change will allow the fixed cost of the BEMC system to be more fairly allocated to all 78,000 members. This will include aligning rates between the base facility charge and the charge for energy. The impact on an individual member’s bill from the changes to the rate schedule will be determined by the amount of energy the member’s household uses each month. However, an average residential member who uses 1,000 kWh per month will see an increase of approximately $8.64 per month.
“We are excited about an introductory time-of-use program that will allow members who opt-in to the program to take advantage of new, lower cost energy on weekends, overnight, and during non-peak times of the weekdays,” said Winslow. “We are very aware of the impact a rate increase has on our members and feel that the time-of-use option may be valuable to those who put the program to work for them.”
Members will receive detailed communication about these rate changes in the cooperative’s newsletter inside the November issue of Carolina Country magazine or by visiting bemc.org.
Members who would like to discuss how the rate changes may affect them should contact BEMC’s customer service department by calling (800) 842-5871, Monday through Friday, between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m.
