SOUTHPORT, N.C. – Parents and families benefit from enrolling in the evidence-based Communities In Schools of Brunswick County (CIS) parenting programs. Circle of Parents support groups and Incredible Years parenting class series strengthens families by promoting effective positive strategies for parents to use to manage their children’s behavior. CIS has provided this service for the county for the past nine years.
Incredible Years Parenting Class 14-week fall series are beginning at three different locations in Brunswick County. Incredible Years Parenting Class series will take place in Southport at Trinity United Methodist Church starting Thursday, September 12, in Leland at the Leland 5th District Building, 1492 Village Road, starting Monday, September 9, and at Shallotte Presbyterian Church in Shallotte starting Tuesday, September 17.
Class sessions are held from 5:30 – 7:30 p.m. for anyone in a parenting role with children ages 5-12 years old. The programs are FREE of charge and include dinner. A meal is served before each session at 5 p.m. Incentives are provided for parents who attend the majority of meetings. The interactive sessions make learning fun and are easy to incorporate into real world parenting situations. Facilitators leading the CIS program are trained through the Incredible Years Network along with continued support from Prevent Child Abuse North Carolina. While parents are meeting, children are in another room learning age appropriate material. Topics are designed to help increase family communication, cooperation, and respect.
Sheila Deans, CIS Parenting Education program participant shared, “I am a member of the Grandparents Raising Grandchildren and Incredible Years parenting classes in Leland. It had been 30 years since raising my children. In the classes I learned a lot of things that I had forgotten like how to not get upset over little things, to have more patience, and to pay attention to the good instead of the bad. I learned that what you pay attention to the most is what you get. My grandchildren and I talk a lot more since I took the class and I do not have the problems that I did before I took the class.”
Class space for the Incredible Years series is limited and fills up quickly. To reserve your space or for more information, please call Margaret Roseman, Parenting Education Director, at 910.253.5327 ext. 1435.
