SOUTHPORT, N.C. – Communities In Schools of Brunswick County (CIS) has received a $1,500 grant from the International Paper Foundation to purchase independent reading books for low Reading proficiency students being provided with tutoring through the CIS Action for Success Program.
Books will be provided to students just prior to Winter, Spring, and Summer breaks to take home and keep to promote reading as a leisure activity and to ensure students have access to quality reading materials that are appropriate for their reading level and are focused on topics of personal interest. Books will be selected by students based on topics of interest and their individual reading levels. Providing reading materials for students during school breaks helps prevent reading skill loss when school is not in session.
International Paper Foundation has generously provided grants to support book distributions for CIS for the past several years. CIS is grateful for their commitment and contribution to literacy and developing strong reading skills for Brunswick County students.
Students always look forward to receiving the books as many do not have age-appropriate reading material at home. Every year students ask their CIS Success Coaches if they will be receiving books again. The students really enjoy having their own books to keep. Students have shared their books with others so they are each exposed to even more opportunities to read. One student asked his Success Coach if he could get the entire series of the books he read because he enjoyed them so much. What seems like a small contribution, reaps big rewards and can have a lasting impact on a student’s future. Reading is critical for all future career and continuing education opportunities for students.
Recognized as the most effective dropout prevention program in the nation, the CIS Action for Success Program follows best practices of the national CIS Model, providing students with one-on-one relationships with caring adults to help remove barriers to learning. Meeting basic needs and providing evidence-based interventions helps students achieve their academic, social, and emotional goals, preparing them to enter college, the military, or the workforce upon graduation.
