BOLIVIA, N.C. – The New Hanover Regional Medical Center AirLink aircraft stationed at Novant Health Brunswick Medical Center is now operating 24 hours a day.
The aircraft was first stationed at the Brunswick campus in January 2019 to enable the rapid transport of patients who need critical, specialty interventions available at NHRMC and other trauma centers. Since then, the aircraft has completed more than 250 flights. Initially, the aircraft was operational 12 hours a day during peak times.
“Through this community partnership and collaboration with Brunswick Medical Center, Brunswick County EMS, and NHRMC’s AirLink medevac, access to specialized care is now expedited for patients in the most critical situations,” said John Popella, NHRMC’s director of critical care transport. “It takes an integrated system to ensure patient access to the most appropriate care. Together, we have helped patients suffering from severe traumatic events, strokes, and heart attacks get timely interventions, and have helped other patients with time-sensitive emergencies rapidly get the care they need.”
“We are proud to extend our partnership with New Hanover Regional Medical Center to include 24/7 AirLink operations for our patients in critical need,” said Shelbourn Stevens, president and chief operating officer of Novant Health Brunswick Medical Center. “Novant Health is committed to ensuring that the Brunswick County community has access to round-the-clock care, even in the most critical situations. I look forward to how this partnership will continue to grow and help our patients receive the care they need as quickly as possible.”
NHRMC AirLink helicopters are also stationed in Jacksonville and Whiteville, where they operate 24/7. An NHRMC VitaLink transport vehicle will continue be stationed at Brunswick Medical Center to enable specialty care ground transport when air service is not available.
Every AirLink helicopter has highly specialized equipment including blood products, laboratory testing, high flow nasal cannulas, ventilators, and cardiac monitors with hemodynamic monitoring systems. The team is staffed with a pilot, a critical care registered nurse and a critical care paramedic.
