SOUTHPORT, N.C. – Communities In Schools of Brunswick County (CIS) is pleased to announce the receipt of two Community Grants from Walmart Store #1767 of Shallotte and Walmart Store #4273 of Leland. These grants will support CIS work providing tutoring to students in local schools, including Leland Middle School in Leland and Shallotte Middle School in Shallotte, where these Walmart stores are located. CIS provides a Success Coach in six local schools to work one-on-one and in small groups with students identified as at-risk for not being promoted to the next grade or dropping out of school due to a variety of risk factors. These factors include low academic proficiency, behavioral issues, and truancy. One of the areas where CIS Success Coaches intervene is providing tutoring to students struggling to keep pace with grade level skills in core subjects, including Reading/Language Arts, Math, and Science.
The Community Grants provided by Walmart Shallotte and Walmart Leland will be used to support tutoring with students to help them keep pace with peers and become grade level proficient so they will remain committed to attending school, learning, and working toward promotion to the next grade. This past school year CIS provided support to 402 at-risk students in Brunswick County Schools, providing a wide range of services and interventions. At the end of the school year, 99% of those students made significant progress that allowed them to be promoted to the next grade. The support of Walmart of Shallotte and Walmart of Leland will help ensure this level of support is available for students next school year as well. CIS thanks Walmart for being #AllinforKids. A special thank you to Interim Store Manager, Justin Fetzer, of Walmart Shallotte and Store Manager, Jimmy Creech, of Walmart Leland for this support!
Bonnie Jordan, Executive Director of CIS Brunswick County, says, “We are extremely grateful for the support provided through Walmart. As a recognized leader in the local community, Walmart works hard to build and improve lives in the communities it serves.”
CIS is continually looking to improve programs and expand educational experiences for students in Brunswick County. Program funding and support comes from grants, community and corporate partnerships, as well as fundraisers throughout the year. CIS currently provides an Action for Success program in all four Brunswick County middle schools, Waccamaw School, and Supply Elementary utilizing Success Coaches to provide case management and implement needed services, as well as recruiting volunteers and community partners to support student achievement.
The CIS Action for Success Program supports Brunswick County students using tutors, mentors, truancy and behavioral interventions. CIS also provides Teen and Peer Court programs, Parenting Education classes and support groups, and a 21st Century Community Learning Center after school program, with a focus on dropout prevention. Through formal partnerships with Brunswick County Schools, Brunswick County Government, the District Attorney’s Office and the support of other community partners, CIS programs directly touch the lives of over 4,000 students and families each year.
